Days 64 & 65 – A Walk in the Park

On Sunday, our plans to visit Acadia National Park on e-bikes were foiled. None of the rental places in Bar Harbor had any available! There are massive cruise ships in port and we suspect the cruise companies secure all the e-bikes for their passengers well in advance.

We moved the boat from the anchorage to a dock where we were able to fill her water tanks that were running low. Then, we took a walk on the sandbar that connects Bar Island to the mainland and is only usable at low tide. It is fully submerged at high tide, reminiscent of Mont Saint-Michel in France, which used to be only accessible at low tide until a causeway was built. Later in the day, we took our dinghy back into town for dinner, floating right across the spot we had walked on a few hours earlier!

We had a nice dinner with our BFFs (“best flotilla friends”) at McKay’s Public House, a restaurant recommended by locals. Sandy and I both had an excellent truffle flavored seafood risotto, but we will be having it again on the boat because it was way too much for a mortal to consume in one sitting.

On Monday, after a few business calls, we decided to not let e-bike availability ruin our ability to visit Acadia National Park, so we rented traditional bikes and pedaled our way over 25 miles of hilly terrain. It was a good workout and worth the effort. It’s a beautiful park and it was a perfect day with sun, blue sky and pleasant temperatures.

As we returned, we stopped by Amuleto to see how Benoît and Hélène were making out with their oil leak. It’s been hard to find diesel mechanics as everyone is extremely busy. They decided to head over to Southwest Harbor to see how much oil was actually leaking, pending hearing back from a possible mechanic in Rockland. We hope to catch up with them, but we were sad to say goodbye, at least for now.

We had a quiet dinner of leftover risotto on board and enjoyed our last evening anchored in Bar Harbor.

Gorgeous photos of a lovely National Park! Glad you didn’t let availability if e-bikes deter you.

Bar Harbor has always intrigued me because of its unusual name. Haven’t made it there yet. (Nor Acadia either for that matter.

Worth a trip. And there are humongous cruise ships (Holland America, Norwegian Princess, etc.) that call on Bar Harbor, Portland, etc.
