Day 37 – We Be Clammin’

Nous souhaitons à nos amis en Suisse une bonne fête nationale! Wir wünschen unseren Freunden in der Schweiz einen schönen Bundesfeiertag! Auguriamo ai nostri amici in Svizzera, buona festa nazionale!

Yesterday, we stayed in port in Summerside, PE. The morning was taken up by boat maintenance, laundry, nail salon (Sandy, not Dan) and the like.

After our crossing from the mainland to Prince Edward Island, the boat was caked in salt from waves crashing over the bow. It took a few hours to give her a good top to bottom rinse with fresh water. Also all the lines (ropes) were removed and washed in fresh water. The salt makes them stiff and they don’t work as well.

Prince Edward Island, the smallest Canadian province with just over 170,000 inhabitants, was established in 1604 as part of Acadia, the original French territory, until it was taken over by the British in 1763. It is largely agricultural, producing most of Canada’s potatoes.

Mark, one of the Summerside Yacht Club managers, offered to show us around the local waters, and particularly where to rake clams. He even bought us all clam rakes! So we formed a dinghy fleet and like a squad of Navy Seals, headed out. The water was very warm and pleasant to wade in. Our clam bounty was light, but the activity was fun.

We spent a quiet evening on board. Tomorrow we will visit Charlottetown and connect up with a colleague from 20 years ago.
