After over a month, a thousand nautical miles, four provinces and two time zones, we are now halfway to our destination of Portland, ME.
We only stayed one night in New Brunswick, and continued on for another 80 nautical miler, crossing to Summerside, Prince Edward Island. It’s the second largest town in this island province, the smallest in Canada with only around 150,000 inhabitants.
It was a calm, warm, sunny day in welcome contrast to the day before, even if we had to motor sail the whole way to make time. We relaxed, dried out, and caught up on rest, reading, blogging, etc. Of course, you always have to keep a close watch. Lobster season is officially over in most of the Canadian Maritimes. However, there are still a few lingering pots to avoid. Getting tangled in lobster pot lines is a big problem, and doesn’t make you friends with the lobstermen. This will be a big topic when we eventually get to Maine where there is no seasonal limit.
As the official translator for several weeks in Québec, Dan is now off duty as we’re back in predominately English-speaking Canada. The welcome in PEI was as warm as in Québec. Mark, the manager of Summerside Yacht Club, offered us beer samples while we filled out our registration forms, gave us a personal tour of the marina facilities, and lots of good suggestions for our visit. We had dinner dockside at the club food truck (yes, the kitchen unfortunately was out of service following a fire). It was a nice, relaxing evening, catching up with Jon and Cheri and sharing stories of the last two days of sailing.
